Sound, more than you hear

Location:  Museon, Den Haag, The Netherlands

Investigate sound in 10 experiments

Sounds can be very surprising phenomena. Sound is all around us and we couldn’t live without, but what happens is we focus on the separate characteristics of sound? For example pitch or volume; sound can be high and low, loud or quiet .

The exhibition investigates the features of sound in 10 experiments.  Some of the questions we ask include: What do you hear if you play two tones? Which are almost the same height? Why does the sound of an ambulance change?

frequency and decibel

‘Sound; more than you hear’ talks about 10 sound phenomena. The focus lies on the scientific background of sound. The whole exhibition space is divided physically with 2 big sculptures; one big curl hanging from the ceiling represents the frequency scale and a bench on the floor houses the decibel scale. The end of the exhibition features a large showcase with a collection of sound carriers  of the previous century. Both the frequency and decibel elements of the exhibition are linked to the 10 phenomena explored throughout. On both sculptures, large illustrations (25m long) give further background information and show specific examples. For example, the frequency sculpture demonstrates graphically that an elephant grunt is 10 Hertz and a bass guitar is 41 Hertz. On the decibel sculpture you can learn that a conversation is 60 decibels.
