Safety first!

  • Dutch Railway Museum, Utrecht, The Netherlands

The Dutch railway infrastructure is the most intensively used network of Europe and at the same time it is one of the safest

Clearly this is because there is an enormous organisation and system behind it to make sure all trains drive safely and on time.

The exhibition “Safety first” for the Dutch Railway Museum is about these safety aspects of travelling by train. The exhibition highlights the following six themes:

  • Mandatory signals
  • Solid trains
  • Perfect rail tracks
  • Feeling safe
  • Imminent dangers
  • Human scale

Approach

Yellow crosses

NorthernLight has visualized these six themes in giant yellow crosses. They mark certain areas or trains in the museum and at the same time they tell their own story. Because the crosses are fully decorated with objects, pictures, texts and even mystery objects behind secret doors, therefore entertaining the oldest and the youngest visitor!

All the trains in World 4 in the museum are ‘tagged’ with smaller yellow crosses with specific safety. Playful and educational interactives are scattered around the museum, involving the passenger in a more active and playful way.

Moving photos

The photo exhibition in a specially decorated railway wagon touches a more serious topic, namely the most important train accidents of the last century. The photos on display are from the museums own collection and are very moving and powerful.

The exhibition can be visited from 30th of March till the 4th of December 2011.
